Dr. Brandon Tehanyatarí:ya’ks Martin

Dr. Brandon Tehanyatarí:ya’ks Martin is Kanyenkehá:ka (Mohawk) from Six Nations Grand River Territory, Ontario.

Dr. Martin earned a Ph.D in American Studies, specializing in Haudenosaunee history, at the State University of New York at Buffalo, a MA in American Indian Studies from the University of Arizona, and a BA from Morningside College with majors in Native American Studies and French. His research interests focus on Haudenosaunee language, culture, and history.

For more than a decade Dr. Martin has been directly involved in the Haudenosaunee language revitalization movement at the community level. First as a Kanyen’kéha (Mohawk language) student at Onkwawenna Kentyohkwa in Six Nations. Followed by roles as Program Coordinator and Instructor with Yonkhiyana’tón:nis, which was a Kanyen’kéha adult immersion program that operated at Native American Community Services in Buffalo, New York. And most recently as the Director of Deadiwënösnye’s Gëjóhgwa, which is an Onöndowa’ga:’ Gawë:nö’ (Seneca language) adult immersion program that operates at the Seneca Nation.
