Fish Eyes for Faculty Lounge

The DAS Faculty Lounge has a new artwork: “Fish Eyes” (2020) by Frank Bowen. Frank served as the Workshop Manager in the Department of Architectural Science from 1990 to 2019 and in the Interior Design Shop for several years prior. Over the years, he saved pieces of what are known as ‘waste boards’ - panels with markings created randomly during the digital machining process of the CNC machine. After much experimentation, he found that treating the panels themselves as substrates for painting was the best way to bring out what lay hidden in the chaos. According to Frank, “The imagery arises through lines, shapes and colours influenced by the natural world, everyday observations, dreams, memories and often catastrophic world events.” Fish Eyes is an amalgamation of MDF, acrylic, glass, meta and acrylic paint, framed with solid mahogany, and animated with programmable LED lighting, making this work magical by day and night. Thanks to Frank (and an anonymous donor) for this colorful and luminous addition to the lounge. For more on Frank’s artwork, follow @frankpbowen (external link) on Instagram.
