DAS Students Win Montreal Olympic Stadium Reuse Competition

We are thrilled to announce that Mehakpreet Bhutta, Duha Ismail, Laila Kirton, Nava Mahouri Monfared, and Massimo Montanari have been recognized as one of eight winning proposals in the prestigious Montreal Olympic Stadium Roof Reuse Competition. Out of 54 applicants, they were one of four student groups selected in the space design category. Their winning proposal, "Flotte-De-Lis," repurposes the Montreal Olympic Stadium roof components to create multifunctional spaces within the Olympic Park. Designed to address the community’s needs, the project introduces cool zones, urban agriculture opportunities, and social spaces. Its modularity allows it to be placed in various locations throughout the park, offering flexible configurations for different social activities. The canopies of the modules provide much-needed shade from the sun and shelter from the rain, with seating areas enriched with lush foliage; these areas offer visitors a place to relax and take in the beauty of the Olympic Park and its surroundings. The canopy design honors the distinctive shape of the original stadium roof and features a sophisticated gutter system that channels rainwater into central planters.

By strategically reusing large and abundant components such as struts and cables, the Flotte-De-Lis design maximizes material efficiency and supports circular economy principles. The structure features six struts supporting a canopy, with a singular flying mast suspended by bottom panel cables. New connections, including ground plates and fabric links, enhance the design’s efficiency, enabling the production of 46 modules.

Flotte-De-Lis not only meets the social, climatic, and agricultural needs of the surrounding community but also seamlessly integrates with the existing architectural context of the Olympic Park. The modules create year-round social spaces, promote both soft and active mobility, and encourage urban agriculture, demonstrating a sensitive and sustainable approach to design.
