Student looking at poster in the Paul H. Cocker Gallery

Puglia: Migration and Housing Studio is the first exhibition of the 2023-24 school year. Under the guidance of Dr. Umberto Berardi and Dr. June Komisar, undergraduate students spent a few weeks in Bari, Italy, as part of their design studio abroad. Their final designs and projects, which looked at the intersection of housing, migration, and community, will be on display in the Paul H. Cocker Gallery.

More about the exhibition:
This work is the product of a 4th-year undergraduate architectural design studio at the Department of Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University. The students designed components of an affordable neighbourhood for recent immigrants to Puglia, choosing as their sites the historic but underpopulated 20th-century towns of  Cervaro, Mezzanone, and Segezia. Central to their work were the considerations of affordable housing, a sense of community, education and training facilities, places to worship and gather, as well as a considered response to the existing rational architecture present in all three towns.
