The Rams men’s basketball team has seen a lot of changes to its coaching staff and roster since the last time they played a competitive game in February of 2020, pre-pandemic.
Join us for a night to get to know the coaches and team! The intrasquad game will showcase the 2021-22 roster and will feature discussions with head coach David DeAveiro.
The game will be produced by students in the RTA: Sport Media program.
David DeAveiro was named head coach of the Rams men's basketball team on April 28, 2020. DeAveiro came to the Rams after serving as head coach of the McGill University men's basketball team for 10 seasons. Prior to joining McGill, he coached the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees for nine seasons. DeAveiro is the 14th head coach in Rams men's basketball program history.
A Toronto native, DeAveiro posted a 199-137 record in 336 games overall with McGill, including a 186-90 mark against U SPORTS opponents and a stellar 116-44 record in regular season play. He led McGill to five Quebec conference (RSEQ) titles and five appearances at the U SPORTS Final 8 in his final eight years with the program.
With the Gee-Gees, DeAveiro was the team's all-time leader in coaching wins, posting an impressive 210-127 record overall, including a 132-66 mark in league play. He guided Ottawa to three appearances at the Final 8 national championship.
DeAveiro has also had an extensive coaching history with numerous Canadian national teams, including the men's senior, development and junior levels. In 2018, he was an assistant on the Canadian squad that won silver at the Commonwealth Games in Australia. The Canadian team was composed of university seniors including former Rams Jean-Victor Mukama and Ammanuel Diressa.
DeAveiro spent six summers as head coach of the Canadian cadet program, which finished fifth at the 2016 FIBA U-17 world championship in Spain, second at the 2015 FIBA Americas U-16 championship in Argentina, sixth at the 2014 FIBA U-17 world championship in Dubai, third at the 2013 FIBA Americas U-16 tourney in Uruguay and fifth at the 2012 FIBA U-17 world championship in Lithuania.
A graduate of both the University of Ottawa (BSoc '89) and Brock University (BEd '92), DeAveiro played five seasons with the Gee-Gees before joining the team's coaching staff.
