Research Director, Ryerson’s Digital Media Zone
Hossein Rahnama is the associate director of Ryerson’s Digital Media Zone, where he leads its market-driven research arm, facilitating and encouraging industry partnerships with DMZ companies and teams. He also leads the DMZ research team Flybits, where undergraduate and graduate students work together to break new ground in mobile and pervasive computing, with specific interests in the transit, transport and security industries. In 2010, the Flybits team launched the Mobile Transit Companion for the Paris Metro Authority, a mobile application that provides passengers in transit with live, customized data. Hossein is the research director of the Ubiquitous Computing Group at Ryerson, and an instructor in the university’s Department of Computer Science. He has more than 15 publications and patents on ubiquitous and pervasive computing to his name.
Receiving the the Alumni Achievement award in 2012 was a humbling and affirming experience that reinforced my sense of belonging within a community of accomplished individuals, all of whom share a common educational foundation and respect for values such as perseverance, entrepreneurship and inclusion.
