Al Coates
Business Administration ’68
Executive Director, IIHF World Junior Championships
Over four decades in hockey, Al Coates’ extensive and varied career has been successful at all levels. He spent 20 years with the Calgary Flames, working in a variety of roles before becoming the team’s executive vice-president, general manager and alternate governor. In this role, he was part of a Stanley Cup championship in 1989. Mr. Coates later moved to the New York Rangers and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim where, as senior advisor to the general manager, he won a second Stanley Cup in 2007. He served as director of player personnel with the Toronto Maple Leafs the following year. In 2006, he was awarded the Thomas Ebright award for his outstanding contributions to the AHL.
At TMU I learned that there is a lot to learn - but I was prepared with knowledge, maturity and a conviction to succeed — to forge my own success story and hopefully provide a gift for others.
