Spend a day with Nutrition and Food student, Rachel
Hey! I’m Rachel, a second-year Nutrition and Food student here at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). A lot of people ask me if I just study food all day, and I guess that’s half true. Come join me for a food-filled day on campus!
6 a.m.
I hate to say it, but I’m such a morning person — it’s quiet, peaceful and no one is up to bother me yet. Oats and notes (eating oats and studying) is my daily ritual. After a good study session, I’ll pack my lunch (very Nutrition student of me, I know) and then I’ll take the TTC (external link, opens in new window) to campus.

9 a.m.
My FNS 200: Quantity Food Management lab is definitely my favourite class this semester. It’s exciting that Nutrition and Food students get the opportunity to cook in labs! It’s also pretty great getting a free lunch every week. Today, we made roasted tilapia and broccoli salad. We learned about serving sizes by comparing the original portion to the Canada’s Food Guide serving sizes. Guess which is which!

12 p.m.
After my lab, I went to the Podium building (POD) to eat lunch and catch up with my friends (procrastinate studying). The natural lighting is always nice.

1 p.m.
My friends and I decided to celebrate the end of the week by going on a walk to get a sweet treat. One of the great things about attending TMU is that there are so many places to get food. My favourite sweet treats are from the Chinese bakeries in Chinatown. Pineapple buns > everything!

2 p.m.
Now it’s time for my FNS 200: Quantity Food Management lecture. This class goes into detail about food systems and how they operate. So much planning and organization goes into serving food, and I’ll never look at a restaurant in the same way again. Since the class is online, I’ll usually join from a study room at the Daphne Cockwell Complex (DCC). These rooms are a great perk for Faculty of Community Service students like me, especially in case the study rooms in the Student Learning Centre (SLC) are full.

4:30 p.m.
After the study rooms close, I like to do a little work before heading home. I’m all about finding quiet study spots on campus and the Centre for Urban Innovation (CUI) is such a hidden gem.

7 p.m.
It’s finally time to head home! After my commute, I cooked and ate dinner with my family before settling down for some phone-time for the rest of the night.

And that’s a wrap on a day in my life! I hope this sneak peek into my daily routine has gotten you excited about TMU and everything that our university has to offer. Keep an eye on the blog to see what a typical day looks like for more current students like me!
Stay hydrated and eat your vegetables,
Rachel
