If Heartstopper characters went to TMU
A friend introduced me to the Heartstopper comics back in high school, and I became obsessed with them right away. It made me so happy to finally see lighthearted queer representation in the media, and I may or may not have both read all the volumes and watched the first season in one sitting. After rewatching season two again, I wondered what programs the characters would be in here at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).
Nick Nelson in Sport Media

To start off this list, I think Nick Nelson would thrive in the Sport Media program. He’s the star player on his rugby team and known for his love of Formula 1. So, it would be no surprise to find him working behind the scenes of a sports event. He would get to explore his passions further in the program, while also picking up valuable skills related to both media and business.
Charlie Spring in Professional Music

Charlie is a huge music fan who loves playing the drums for the school band and on his own at home, which is why I think he would do well in the Professional Music program. I could also see him and his friends attending open mic nights hosted at The Met (external link, opens in new window) , which is the campus pub. Not only would this program make him a better musician, but it would also prepare him for the industry.
Tao Xu in Image Arts: Film (no questions asked)

Tao Xu would 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, be in film. Throughout the series he is well known for his deep love of films. He has a blog where he writes about films, his walls are covered in movie posters and he goes on quite the rant about why he doesn’t like Moonrise Kingdom. What would be better than getting a hands-on learning experience in TMU's Image Arts: Film program?
Isaac Henderson in English

Isaac is the resident bookworm in his friend group. There's a scene in season two where Isaac stacks book after book into a towering pile while walking around a bookstore. He even leaves prom to head straight to the library. Without a doubt, he definitely would be in the English program.
Elle Argent in Fashion

Elle is an artist in every sense of the word, from her unique style of dress, to her beautiful painting that earned her a spot in a prestigious art school, she just loves creating. One of the most creative programs our school offers is the Fashion program. Through this program, she’d have the chance to create beautiful pieces as well as expand her design knowledge through other fun courses such as jewellery design, carnival arts and contour design.
Darcy Olson in Performance: Acting

Darcy is known for her playful and sometimes dramatic nature. I think the Performance: Acting program would allow her to express this side of her to a fuller extent. Her creativity and playfulness will be helpful in stepping into a character, and I can see her making changes to her voice or walk to embody a character as best as she possibly can. Knowing her goofy side, I can imagine she’ll start messing around during costume design, and start trying on any and all of the costumes she can get her hands on.
Tara Jones in Performance: Dance

Tara Jones is mature and observant. Even though her love for dance isn't explored as much in the television series, it is a part of her character profile in the comics. In the Performance: Dance program she’d have the chance to lean more into her artistic side, learning both theory and practical skills while in the program. Since this program is part of the School of Performance like Performance: Acting, I can see her and Darcy studying together between classes.
I had plenty of fun writing this blog and I hope you liked reading it as well. Did one of these programs catch your eye? Then check out our How to apply page to get your application to TMU started!
