The five items you need to show off your TMU spirit

A campus tour isn’t complete without visiting Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) Campus Store (opens in new window) ! I recently went to the store and saw a few things that you might want to pick up before or after your tour. Take a look at my list of five finds that you need to have to show off your TMU spirit.

Lanyards

Since TMU students are required to have a OneCard to enter buildings on campus, having a lanyard is a lifesaver. You might also have a PRESTO (external link, opens in new window)  card if you’re a commuter like me. My cards become such a hassle when they get lost in my bag or are inside my wallet (that gets lost in my bag). With that said, having it attached to something easily accessible when you’re on the go is so much more convenient.

Bunches of coloured TMU lanyards hang on hooks by the checkout area.

The lanyards are placed next to the checkout area for easy access.

Hoodies

The staple of the Campus Store would have to be the clothing. While walking around the store, I ran into Adriana Trichilo and decided to talk with her. Adriana is a second-year student in the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at TMU. She told me that she bought a few sweatshirts over the years: “I do like [the sweatshirts]... I’ve been seeing a lot of students wearing them on campus.” She also said that the Campus Store has “everything in one place, and you can pop in and pop out of it quickly.”

As I see other students wearing a hoodie from my program or faculty, it makes me feel like I belong on our campus even more. You can have the same experience as a current TMU student and become a part of our community by grabbing a hoodie while visiting our campus.

My friend Sidra joined me while browsing around the store. As proud Journalism students, these hoodies are essential to have in our closets.

Water bottles

I’d recommend stopping by the Campus Store before your campus tour starts to get yourself a water bottle to make the most of your outdoor experience! Since campus tours take place outside, it’s extremely important to stay hydrated. It’s convenient to have a reusable water bottle instead of constantly going to buy disposable ones. On that note, TMU is also a plastic bottle-free campus! It’s also super easy to carry around during the tour due to its lighter weight and handle.

Depending on the weather when you decide to tour our campus, the bottles are great for both hot and cold drinks.

Hats

If you don’t know already, “Made of Grit” is TMU’s campaign to encourage representation, drive and determination. This term represents overcoming obstacles and TMU’s community determination. This slogan is found all around campus — it’s painted on floors and walls and stitched onto clothing. What better way to stand for this message than wearing it?

The Campus Store also has toques to keep you warm during your tour, which is great since it’s currently cold outside. Or, if it’s a sunny day on campus and you just need some shade, grab yourself a cap to keep yourself protected from the heat.

Stationery

If you prefer writing your thoughts on paper like me, our notebooks will not let you down. While you’re waiting to hear back from TMU (or even if you already have), I recommend writing your future goals and aspirations in a physical notebook. During the transitional period from high school to university, it’s nice to look back on where you were and reflect on where you’d like to be in the future. Also, if I were you, I’d use this to journal throughout the years of my university journey. Write about your memories, experiences and day-to-day life at TMU.

The Campus Store provides a large range of materials to meet student's academic needs. For your note-taking, there are all kinds of paper, highlighters, pens and notebooks that are must-haves as a future university student.

Toronto Metropolitan University notebooks are neatly placed on the shelves.

I also suggest using the notebooks as planners for your future TMU schedule!

The Campus Store is located right across from the Student Learning Centre (SLC) on Gould St. While you’re there, keep in mind that it’s your go-to spot for academic essentials and TMU swag.

If you’re looking to visit TMU, don’t forget to register for a general campus tour or a faculty-specific tour to get a glimpse of campus life!

Talk to you later,
