Why I chose TMU after applying to universities

So, you’ve sent in your application and the waiting begins. I remember that more than feeling scared of the rejection, I was worried about making the right choice. It's hard to tell in high school what university will be like, and you don’t really get the entire feel for it until you actually start. I’m so glad I stuck with Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) because I’ve had so many great experiences here, but I know it can be a hard decision to make. Here are some things that I took into consideration when choosing TMU. Hopefully this list can help ease any worries and guide you through your decision process.

Hands-on learning

One thing that I really looked for when applying to programs was whether or not I would get the chance to apply and practice what I learned. With each program listing out the courses in the course calendar for all four years, and including links to their elective tables as well, I got a good grasp on what exactly each program entailed. Several TMU programs featured hands-on learning and co-op options, and since my goal was to get my foot in the door of my career, a school that valued experience and practical use of skills was my best option.

Proximity

As someone who was used to the high school commute, I wanted to have a commute to university that wasn’t too long so that I could focus on both school and making time for friends and family. Of all my options, I felt like TMU was the best proximity wise. Ranging between 30 to 40 minutes from my hometown — depending on how the subway is running — this gives me more than enough time to get schoolwork done, as well as balance my social life. Many of my friends, teammates and peers commute with me too, so I get to spend more time with them.

Downtown is always bustling with activity, no matter what time of day it is.

Location

I love downtown Toronto, and it was a big reason why I chose this school. Growing up, both my parents worked downtown and I spent many summers at their offices and explored the area with them. With so many good memories tied to this part of the city, I wanted to have a chance to learn here and see Toronto from a different perspective. I can now enjoy the city as an adult, while tying many of my classes and learning to the environment around us. With so many co-op and internship opportunities within walking distance of the school, I appreciate the connections and learning I get from studying in the downtown core.

Student life

When looking at my university options, I wanted to make sure the school I selected offered good student life. Friends and social life are important to me as I know a strong support system and having a break from school work from time to time are necessary to do well in school. Thankfully TMU has a plethora of clubs and events that have helped build my social circle. By just looking at the list of student groups (external link, opens in new window)  on the website, you can see that there’s a group for everyone. From sports, to course unions, to interest groups, there's something at TMU for everyone. Since the beginning of my first year, I’ve been involved in the TMU dragon boat team (external link, opens in new window) , and participated in events hosted by both the Association of Roleplayers and Gamers (AARG) (opens in new window)  and the Visual Artist’s Association (VAA) (external link, opens in new window)  — all of which have made my university experience better!
