After the mid-year break, I had the opportunity to talk to students on campus and ask them what their favourite things about Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) are. I appreciate what TMU offers to our students more than ever after listening to what they had to say. Let’s look at what these students love about TMU!

Student groups

Dimitra Ginis is a second-year student in Business Management who is majoring in Marketing Management. She said her favourite thing about TMU are the student groups she’s a member of. Beginning with the TMU Sports and Business Association (external link, opens in new window)  where she’s a corporate relations associate, Dimitra said “you start off with everyone enjoying sports, but it goes deeper than that, you build friendships." She is also a Marketing and External Affairs member for the TMU Plants Club (external link, opens in new window) . Dimitra said this club hosts events that allow people to take better care of their plants. “DCC Live recently happened, so we went there and did a pop-up. If you came in and did origami with us, you got to take plants home as well."

Dimitra cheerfully smiles in the hallway of the Ted Rogers building.

I saw Dimitra completing work on the second floor of the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRS) building before I decided to talk to her.

Orientation Week

Megan Li is a second-year student in Biomedical Sciences. Megan said she loves how the school makes a big effort in planning different fairs and activities to take part in for students. She gave the example of Orientation Week before the school year began. She said it “helped build relationships," and she found people that were similar to her. Megan went to a Craft and Boba event during this week where she made bracelets and socialized with other students. She said that TMU also hosted festivals during Orientation Week, and these helped her face her fears of beginning university.

Not only does Megan enjoy taking part in the entertainment on campus, but she also said she loves going to cafés like Neo Coffee Bar (external link, opens in new window)  located at 770 Bay St.

Success, encouragement and hands-on activities

Nageen Riaz is a second-year Journalism student, and she loves how much TMU really pushes our students towards success. She says that it’s shown through TMU’s various workshops and through the Career Boost program, which she has yet to further explore. Nageen touched upon Student Life and Learning Support (SLLS) at TMU and how they offer workshops for things like portfolio building or math tutoring. Nageen said, “I feel like all of these workshops are always available and faculty are always willing to take time out of their day to help. It’s really important for universities to want their students to succeed, and offering all of these resources through campus while pushing students on campus helps them get where they need to be."

Nageen said she appreciates the hands-on opportunities offered by TMU, specifically in the Journalism program. She said most of it is experiencing what it would be like in the field, like taking videos on campus or asking members of the community to take part in interviews. Nageen said, “I think it's really nice to absorb information about your field outside of your textbook."

At the Student Campus Centre (SCC), Nageen told me she also appreciates the athletic and fitness programs at TMU and how they “get you working outside of the classroom."

Professors with experience

Joseph Kamalendran is a fourth-year Business Technology Management (BTM) student at TMU. His favourite concepts to learn are introduced in his Information Technology Management (ITM) classes. He said, “I really liked the professor, Jim Tam. [You get] real life advice from someone who actually worked in the field.”

Joseph also said that he appreciates the seating availability in many of TMU’s buildings so that he can get some studying in. His favourite is the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRS) building.

The Student Learning Centre (SLC)

Alysha Piri is a third-year student in the Politics and Governance program. She said that her favourite thing about TMU are the study spots around campus, especially during exam season. Alysha said, “During midterm season, I like going to the Student Learning Centre (SLC) and getting work done." Her favourite spots in the SLC are the fourth, sixth and seventh floors. She described the fourth floor as a “great spot when [you need] quiet and lay-low time” and that the other two floors are great for group study sessions with friends.

Alysha also said that as a commuter, it's easier to make friends than one might think. She’s been able to conveniently socialize with other students in a lot of her classes.

Students sit and talk amongst themselves in groups on the SLC sixth floor.

The sixth floor at the SLC is also known as "the Beach." It’s a lively place where students gather with friends or get work done.

Athletic and fitness programs

Galchaa Gormu is a fourth-year Journalism student, and he said that he loves taking part in intramurals and working out in the Recreation and Athletic Centre (RAC) on campus. TMU offers athletic and fitness programs where you can take part in physical wellbeing at a leisurely pace or competitively.

Galchaa said that he gained relationships with intramural teammates that share the same athletic interests as him. He wishes he could go more than once a week to the RAC but said, “I have stuff that I do outside of school, so having something [to do] is nice when I’m [here for] class and am already on campus."

Galchaa smiles at the camera.

Galchaa said that his favourite athletic activities are playing soccer and basketball when he’s on campus.

I really enjoyed listening to what students from different programs and experiences love about TMU. Hopefully you find similar interests and appreciate what TMU has to offer once you join our community!

Talk to you later,
