My top 5 underrated study spots on campus

It’s midterm season, and I’m extremely busy preparing for upcoming exams and working on assignments that I’m determined to complete before their due dates. When I’m on campus, I’m often looking for places where I can study with limited distractions around me. Here’s a compilation of my top five favourite study spots at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

Library seventh floor (LIB)

If you’re looking for a quiet place to get your work done, the seventh floor of the Library Building is the place to go. Not only is this a quiet floor, but there are individual carrel spaces to sit in with zero interruptions. The individual carrels are my favourite, especially since I easily get distracted by people watching. You can get to this spot by entering the Student Learning Centre (SLC) and making your way up to the second floor. Then head into the Library Building (LIB) and take the elevators up to the seventh floor.

Students recline and work in the individual study carrels on a quiet floor in the TMU library.

These individual study carrels are located on the seventh floor of the Library Building and are convenient when you want your own space.

Oakham Café

Before I became familiar with other study spaces on campus, I went to Oakham Café (external link, opens in new window)  at least once a week. It’s still my go-to place when I need to grab a quick bite to eat on campus and sit down to get some work done. This café’s environment is so comforting. It’s also really motivating when you have a coffee beside you as moral support! Oakham Café is located inside of the Student Campus Centre (SCC), which is another great place to study as well.

A brick wall surrounds the entrance to Oakham Cafe with empty yellow chairs in front of the doors.

Oakham Café has the best and most affordable foods. The café is located to the left when you enter the Student Campus Centre (SCC).

Rogers Communications Centre (RCC)

With its open and bright environment, the third floor in the RCC is my favourite — and most visited — place to get to work. In addition, the Venn (RCC103) is a room in the RCC where most Journalism students (like me) go to work. Aside from being a flexible place where events and meetings are held, you will find students studying by themselves or in groups. Most of my classes are held in the RCC, so it’s convenient to meet my friends and study here. If you’re in the Journalism program, you will probably run into some of your professors here too, and can ask for further clarification on assignments.

Students are surrounded with bright open windows as they are sitting at tables on their laptops.

I always sit on the couches that are in the corners of the third floor of the RCC.

Library eighth floor (LIB)

The Library Building gets another mention on my list. The eighth floor is a large space to socialize or even get work done individually. In addition to the large amount of seating here, you get amazing views of Yonge-Dundas Square. I often book a study room on this floor to get work done. Various study rooms in the Library Building can be booked for individual or group use.

There is a wall of green leaves upon entering the library room as students work in groups on their laptops..

One of the best spots for group studying sessions is on the eighth floor of the Library Building.

10 Dundas (DSQ)

The last underrated study spot on campus that I have for you is 10 Dundas, located next to Yonge-Dundas Square. I have a few classes in the Cineplex theatres on the top floor. You’ll also find a food court in the same building. You might think a food court is an odd place to study, but whether you’re alone or have friends with you, it’s really nice to grab something to eat and get work done. The reason I love it there is its convenience. There’s always seating available, and it's not too noisy since many other TMU students are also there silently catching up on schoolwork.

A TMU student sits next to their backpack in the brightly lit food court at 10 Dundas.

The fourth floor of 10 Dundas located next to Yonge-Dundas Square always has seating available.

I hope you made note of a few of my favourite underrated study spots here at TMU. Be sure to check out these spaces if you visit campus!

Talk with you later,
