Five Qs About You and TMU: Saba

One of our six faculties here at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is the Faculty of Science, which is home to our Computer Science program. I spoke to Saba, a third-year student in the program, to learn more about her experience here at TMU. Outside of being a student, she’s also co-president of the ArtSci (external link, opens in new window)  student organization and a member of the external committee in the Undergraduate Science Society of Toronto Metropolitan (external link, opens in new window)  (USSTM).

Saba smiles and gives a peace sign while canoeing during a Student Group Leadership Retreat.

Jenna: Can you describe your program to me in one sentence?

Saba: It's a step up from high school computer science — it's a lot of mathematics, algorithms, data structures and a bunch of different programming languages that you learn throughout the years that all just build your skill sets in those fields.

J: Why did you choose to study at TMU?

S: I chose TMU because I found the pace of the program and the learning environment worked the best for me. I also thought that it would be great in terms of location because it's right in the middle of downtown Toronto. There's access to a lot of different resources, and I thought that was perfect.

J: Can you tell me about any experiential learning that you’ve participated in?

S: I’ve attended a couple of different events. Some of them have been conferences and seminars not necessarily related to my program per say, but for example, about careers. I've also done a couple hackathons, which are more relevant to computer science. I also recently attended a conference called the Canadian Celebration of Women in Computing.

J:  What is your favourite thing that you have experienced on campus?

S: Nothing wild so far, but I did like a couple of classes that I've taken, most of which have been online up until now. I really liked CPS 420: Discrete Structures. I personally found it super challenging, but it was really interesting to me because I had no idea what to expect going into it. It challenged me, and I feel like I learned a lot.

J: What advice would you give to someone who is starting their research about which university or program they want to pursue?

S: I wish someone had told me when I was applying to university that beyond just the program and the location, you really should consider the actual courses that the program offers, as well as what other features the program offers — like co-op. Take a look into what universities’ co-op programs entail and look into the courses that you have to take in the programs. The program names and the degree can all be the same, but you're coming out of it with a different skill set depending on the courses that you take.

Thank you to Saba for chatting with me, I definitely learned a lot! If you think TMU’s Computer Science program might be a good fit for you, check out our How to Apply page.

Stay tuned to the blog for more interviews with current students from all across our university.

Until next time,
