Even after being a student here since September 2019, I find that there is still so much to discover about Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Here’s the A to Z of TMU, so you can get introduced to what our university is all about.

Athletics: Here at TMU we have two gyms available to students: the Recreation and Athletics Centre and the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Students can use the facilities for their own individual workouts or join a group fitness class. We also have intramural sports and our competitive athletic sports teams (external link, opens in new window)

Bold: Our athletic teams and student body are known as the TMU Bold (external link, opens in new window) ! The mascot for the TMU Bold is a falcon.

ChooseTMU: The best Instagram account (external link, opens in new window)  to follow to find out the most about TMU offerings and student life! You can also find us on TikTok (external link, opens in new window) , YouTube (external link, opens in new window) , Twitter (external link, opens in new window)  and Facebook (external link, opens in new window) !

Daphne Cockwell Health Sciences Complex (DCC): DCC is one of the newest buildings on campus! It has classrooms, student residences and even a rooftop garden that grows fresh produce.

Experiential learning: TMU is well-known for all the experiential learning opportunities it offers students, including co-ops, internships, international exchanges, field work, labs and more.

Faculties: Here at TMU we have six undergraduate faculties: the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Community Services, Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, Faculty of Science, The Creative School and the Ted Rogers School of Management

Gould Street: This street is one of the main streets found on our campus! By walking down Gould Street you’ll see our Student Learning Centre (opens in new window) , the Campus Store (opens in new window) , Lake Devo and so much more.

Housing: TMU has three residence options for students who’d like to live on campus: Pitman Hall, the International Living/Learning Centre and the aforementioned DCC.

Image Centre: The Image Centre (external link, opens in new window)  on campus has rotating photography galleries and exhibits for students and the public to peruse. The Image Centre has pictures of legendary Canadians on the side and lights up at night, making it one of my favourite buildings to look at on campus.

The exterior of the Image Centre lit up in light blue against a night sky, with the blue reflecting in Lake Devo below.

Jorgenson Hall: Jorgenson Hall is another one of our buildings, named after our second president, Fred Jorgenson. Here you can find the Faculty of Arts, as well as some student services.

Kerr Hall: The most confusing building on campus! You’re not an official TMU student until you’ve gotten lost trying to find a class in Kerr Hall.

Library: The TMU Library (opens in new window)  is more than just a building with books. It’s home to recently renovated study spaces, special archives and librarians to help you with your research. Their website comes in handy when working on research projects and essays, giving students access to countless online resources.

Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC): The MAC (external link, opens in new window)  is one of our two gyms on campus, but it’s way more than just that. It used to be the former Maple Leaf Gardens (external link, opens in new window) , where the Toronto Maple Leafs played. Now it has a basketball court, hockey rink and workout area. You might even find yourself writing a final exam in this building!

Nelson Mandela Walk: Nelson Mandela Walk is a walkway on campus that leads to many buildings including the Library, Podium and Jorgenson Hall. Students can enjoy native trees and plants while walking to and from classes.

Oakham Café: Oakham (external link, opens in new window)  is a great place to get food on campus. They have all-day breakfast, weekly specials and the best part is, it’s all priced low to be student-friendly.

Programs: TMU has over 60 undergraduate programs that cover pretty much every possible interest possible.

Quidditch: Yes, TMU has Quidditch, the most magical sport of them all!

RTA School of Media: The RTA School of Media houses three undergraduate programs that cover just about every media-related thing you can imagine, from sport media to video game creation.

ServiceHub: The ServiceHub is *the* place for students to get help with undergraduate admissions, fees, financial assistance and more.

Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM): TRSM is TMU’s business school and home to all of our business programs, including Business Management and Accounting & Finance

Urban Farm: You can totally have agriculture in the middle of downtown Toronto — look no further than our own Urban Farm! TMU’s Urban Farm operates out of two rooftop gardens, and supplies food to farmers markets and eateries on campus.

Volunteer Link: If you’re looking to get involved on campus and gain leadership skills, Volunteer Link is the resource for you. They connect TMU students to volunteer opportunities on campus and in the surrounding community.

Wellbeing: Student wellbeing is a priority here at TMU. Wellbeing can mean different things to different students, but here at TMU we have multiple services to promote student wellness including Academic Accommodation Support, the Centre for Student Development and Counselling and ThriveTMU

eXplore: Our location in downtown Toronto allows for easy exploration of the city. There’s countless restaurants, many museums and so many opportunities to discover!

Pedestrians explore Kensington Market's bright and unique storefronts on a sunny, fall day.

Kensington Market, one of my favourite places to explore in Toronto.

You: At TMU there are endless opportunities to find yourself, as well as find and join numerous communities through Career Boost jobs, student organizations (opens in new window)  and course unions (opens in new window)

Zone Learning: Here at TMU we have 10 zones where students can gain real world experience in 10 different industries by working with projects and students either individually or collaboratively in a team.

This is just scratching the surface of everything TMU! Keep reading the blog to learn more about TMU, beyond the A to Z.

Until next time,
