4 Things I'm Looking Forward to in My Fourth Year

By: Jenna Larkin

I can’t believe I’m currently in my fourth and final year here at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU)! A lot has changed since I started in the Creative Industries (CRI) program in September 2019, which has inspired me to take advantage of all the opportunities that come my way during the upcoming school year. Here are four things that I’m looking forward to in my fourth year of university.

Being Part of My Course Union

One thing I regret from my first year of university is not being involved more. I didn’t want to overwhelm myself, so I didn’t take opportunities to participate in extracurriculars and other school-related activities as much as I could have. Last school year, I decided to change that, and I ran to be Vice President of Communications for the Creative Industries Course Union (external link, opens in new window) . I won, and this year I’m looking forward to working with the team to make sure all Creative Industries students get the most out of their experience at TMU! Course unions (external link, opens in new window)  are like a student government for your program, and they’re a great way to get involved, meet your peers and gain experience in social media, finance, event planning and more, depending on your position.

Part of my responsibilities for the Creative Industries Course Union was helping to run our orientation for first-year students.

My Classes

I’ve taken 32 classes for my degree so far, and have only ten more to go! Out of those classes, there are a few that I am particularly excited for. This semester, I’m taking ENG 224: Children’s Literature, an open elective that counts towards my English minor. Anne of Green Gables, which is one of my favourite books, is on the reading list for this class, and I’m so ready to feel the nostalgia. I’m also looking forward to taking RTA 902: Social Media in the winter semester. Much like most people my age, I spend lots of time on social media, so learning about it in a classroom will be an interesting experience. Also in the upcoming winter semester, I’m taking CRI 860: The Big Night, which is a course where students work in teams to plan and execute a public event related to the creative industries. It sounds like a challenge, but a fun one.

Exploring the City

One of the reasons I chose TMU was because of its location in downtown Toronto. It’s my favourite city and despite living here for three years now, there is still so much for me to see and do. This year I want to try more food (anything in Kensington Market (external link, opens in new window)  is automatically on my list), take advantage of free Tuesdays for students at the Royal Ontario Museum (external link, opens in new window) , visit the St. Lawrence Market (external link, opens in new window)  and SO much more. It looks like I’m going to have a busy year!

This summer I took the ferry to the Toronto Islands (external link, opens in new window)  for the first time as an adult! I can’t wait to explore the rest of the city this year.

Graduating!

It’s hard to believe that I’ll be graduating from TMU in the spring! The time has genuinely flown by. It’s the first time in my life that I don’t really know what’s next, so everyone who asked me that question this past summer was likely a little disappointed with the (maybe sarcastic) answer I gave them. I’m very much still enjoying my time at TMU, but part of me is ready to move on to the next chapter, whatever it may be.

Am I in a little bit of denial that I’m going to be graduating in eight short months? Yes. However, until then, I’m going to do my best to enjoy whatever comes my way during my fourth year because hey, it’s the last one! Luckily for you, you’re going to get all insider information right here on the blog.

Until next time,

Jenna
