Differences Between High School And University

I spent the summer before university wondering what to expect from it. Thinking about what would make it so different from my high school experience had me in a constant daze. But now, through my experiences as a university student, I’ve noticed a few key differences and I’d like to lay them out for you in order to give you some insights as to what’s in store for you.

Having More Freedom

In high school, I was only able to leave the premises when I had a free period or lunch. Now, I’m able to leave campus whenever I’d like because I’m not restricted to stay there at all times. Being in the city, I’ve had more options in terms of where I can go. There are tons of restaurants, parks, libraries and other places to explore. Besides staying close, you could also travel far for leisure or do a semester abroad

Figuring Out Ways/Resources To Stay Safe

In high school, I’d have teachers looking after me all the time, in practically all places. I’d never be left unattended on school grounds. In university, things are different. Safety is a priority at the university, and campus security patrols campus at all times. With this, it’s important to know ways to stay safe, which is why we have many safety resources available for you to explore.

Holding Yourself Accountable

Back in high school, I remember teachers would constantly remind me about deadlines coming up or missed assignments. Coming into university, I learned that you have to stay on top of things yourself. Now, when I have to miss an assignment for any reason, I have to reach out to the professor and figure out a plan to make up for it. If I don’t do that then I would get a zero for the assignment. I know this sounds scary, but it’s easy to prevent! You can mark things down on your calendar, make to-do lists and contact your professors when you’re unsure about something. Holding yourself accounting is extremely important

These are only a few differences between university and high school that I’ve noticed. There are many more out there, and I’m sure you’ll discover them when you come to university. I hope this helped give you some insight.

“See” you soon!
