What's Next for Me and My Friends in Biomedical Sciences
Some students come into university with an end goal in mind. This could be becoming an engineer after studying engineering, a published author after studying English or a doctor after studying Biomedical Sciences. But, you need to keep in mind that plans change. I’ve discussed with a lot of my classmates what they want to do after graduating, and their answers have changed over time. Today, I’m going to discuss my plans and my friends' plans once we complete our Biomedical Sciences degrees!
One of my friends, Steven, hopes to pursue engineering in the future. This is a really cool hands-on option to look into after graduating. He’ll do this by applying to master’s programs in the field. Steven said that “Biomedical Sciences’ curriculum and faculty have helped me build a strong foundation for pursuing a masters in molecular biology research or engineering.” Imagine being an engineer with in-depth biomedical sciences knowledge — how great is that?
Another friend I spoke to, Kiara, is interested in pursuing a field directed towards patient care. She wants to go into nursing, and I think it’s a great idea because she’ll have a great foundation of why everything happens from a biological standpoint when handling patients. She believes that “The Biomedical Sciences program basis is incredibly important for the career in nursing in which applications of scientific-evidence are utilized for patient health.” To accomplish this, she is going to find an accelerated bachelor’s program in nursing. How neat would it be to have TWO bachelor’s degrees!
I personally love the sciences and learning about how my body works. However, I want to pursue a psychology graduate degree and become a therapist. The stream I wish to go into is either counseling or clinical psychology so I am able to give therapy to patients. I love being able to help people work through their challenges in an effective way. I can’t quote myself, but if I could I’d say something along the lines of, “Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and I want to play a role in helping people prioritize it.”
These are just a few directions you could go in once completing a Biomedical Sciences degree. There are so many other options out there, and I’ve just scratched the surface with these paths. As a student here, you’re able to visit the Career & Co-op Centre for more information and advice from certified professionals. I hope discussing our education/career paths has inspired you to maybe explore outside of your comfort zone, and who knows, maybe you’ll find something else that you’re passionate about!
“See” you soon
