Movies and TV Shows Filmed Near/On Campus

Our campus is located downtown in the centre of the most diverse and populated city in Canada. Having our campus immersed in such a big city means that there are a lot of movies and TV shows that are filmed right on campus or nearby. Movies and TV shows are shot all throughout Toronto year-round. When watching, sometimes it can be hard to notice because these productions are really good at making you think they were shot in cities like New York, Chicago, Atlanta or any other big urban city. Here is a list of just a couple of movies and TV shows that were filmed near or on campus.

1. Suits

This show is hands-down my favourite of all time, and knowing it was filmed right here in Toronto makes it 10xbetter. Suits is a show about a high-stakes legal firm in New York City. The whole show is set in New York City, but Suits was mainly filmed in Toronto’s Financial District, with various locations around the city. The Bay Adelaide Centre at 333 Bay Street served as the fictional law firm of Pearson Specter Litt. When the show was filming, it was very common to come across the production if you were in downtown Toronto, and many people have had the chance to snap selfies with the main actors around the city.

2. Suicide Squad

This super-villain mash-up movie holds the distinction of being the highest-earning movie ever shot in the city of Toronto. During filming, Toronto Twitter went wild when the Batmobile was spotted on Yonge Street near our Student Learning Centre, the Toronto Eaton Centre and Yonge-Dundas Square back in 2015. This movie has lots of Toronto-centric scenes that show off various areas like Union Station, the Financial District and Lower Bay Station. In this movie, you’ll find scenes like Deadshot (Will Smith) rappelling down the side of 151 Front St. W., a snowstorm scene along Adelaide St. E., a plane crash scene on Yonge St. between College and Wellesley, and a helicopter crash on Bay Street.

3. The Umbrella Academy

This comic book-based series, which is about seven estranged superhero siblings trying to save the world, is mostly filmed right here in Toronto and throughout the Great Toronto Area (GTA). The show used the city filmed in  various locations across the city including Toronto’s Allan Gardens, the Queen East neighbourhood and the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre.

4. The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale is based on the books by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, and is a show that many Torontonians have probably seen filming around the city with groups of actors wearing the iconic red handmaid’s capes for the show. Filming locations include the Tony Bridle Path neighbourhood, Ripley’s Aquarium, St. Lawrence Market, the Bentway and Toronto City Hall.

5. The Incredible Hulk

The famous Marvel movie, The Incredible Hulk, filmed the majority of its scenes in Toronto. This includes scenes at Convocation Hall, the Cherry Street bridge, Scarborough’s Morningside Park and a very iconic and climactic fight that begins on Yonge Street. Another big scene in this movie includes two of the main characters getting stuck in a traffic jam underneath the Gardiner Expressway.

6. Kim’s Convenience

Last but surely not least, the famous and well-known show Kim’s Convenience is also filmed in Toronto. This show follows members of a Korean-Canadian family as they run a convenience store in the Moss Park area of Toronto. Unlike a lot of the other shows and movies, Kim’s Convenience is actually set in Toronto. The convenience store used in many scenes of the show has officially changed its name to Kim's Convenience, and is located at 252 Queen St. E. It is open as a regular store for customers to browse through.

This is only a small list of the many, many shows and movies filmed in our beautiful city! Did any of these movies or TV shows surprise you?
