If Harry Potter Characters Went to Our University

There is one school that I, and I imagine many others, always wanted to go to: the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Unfortunately, I never received any sort of invitation. So here I am currently getting my education here at our university in the Creative Industries program. We all know Hogwarts has a wide variety of magical classes, but I was wondering about what these characters would be studying if they went to our Muggle university?

Harry Potter as the double major athlete

Harry left his suburban life to live in downtown Toronto in an apartment that wasn’t much larger than his cupboard under the stairs. At our university, Harry is pursuing a double major in Politics and Governance and Criminology so he can one day become a leader in the government, and make meaningful change regarding the wizarding world. When he’s not in class, he’s captain of our Quidditch team, always capturing the Golden Snitch for the win. In his free time, Harry obviously spends all of his time with his best friends Ron and Hermione, who he met on the first day of Orientation Week.

Hermione Granger as the advocate academic

Hermione was the ultimate brains of the Harry Potter group. Besides taking as many classes as she could, she also tried to look out and advocate for those in need. At our university, Hermione would also be in the Politics and Governance program so she can learn all the necessary skills to make a difference in the world and grow initiatives like the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare (SPEW). Outside of class, Hermione can always be seen studying at the Student Learning Centre (always on the silent floor!) and participating in our university’s debate club.

Ron Weasley as the kind and caring business student

Ron wasn’t initially sure what to study at our university, but he knew he had to come here because his many siblings did as well.  Eventually, Ron chose the Business Management program at the Ted Rogers School of Management, majoring in Entrepreneurship so he can help run his family’s joke shop, Weasely’s Wizard Wheezes. He works and lives on campus as a residence advisor in one of our residence buildings, showing kindness and providing support for first-year students. In his free time, Ron can be found playing intramural sports and Quidditch with his best friend Harry.

Draco Malfoy as the competitive Criminology student

Draco’s interest in the dark arts would also lead him to our university’s Criminology program. He would always be competing against Harry for the best grades in the classes they share together. In addition, our favourite Slytherin would also be pursuing a Chemistry minor to advance his interest in potions. Draco would also be the president of the Criminology Course Union (external link, opens in new window) . Around campus Draco can always be found with a cup of Balzac’s coffee (external link, opens in new window)  in his hand, muttering “Potter!” under his breath.

Neville Longbottom as the plant and environment aficionado

Neville’s love and enthusiasm for all things herbology would lead him to the Environment and Urban Sustainability program. His passion for protecting the plants he loves would result in his success in the program. Outside of class he works with the university’s Urban Farm and helps with the planting and maintaining of produce on our rooftop farms. Neville also volunteers his time as a mentor to the Tri-Mentoring Program to help first-year students overcome their shyness and any challenges they may be facing.

Our university might not have all the potions and charms of Hogwarts, but it is certainly magical in its own way.
