6 Facts about Jeremy

By: Jeremy Tobing
November 22, 2021

Greetings! My name is Jeremy! I’m a fifth-year Mechanical Engineering student in the Mechatronics Option and the Optional Specialization in Management Sciences. This is actually my fourth year creating content about my university experience.

I’d like to take some time to share six things about myself so all of you that are new here can get to know me a little better. Sound good?

1. LEGO made me want to be an engineer

I collected LEGO Star Wars sets growing up

I amassed quite the LEGO collection when I was younger. I found there to be an almost magical quality about being able to turn a bunch of plastic pieces into a spaceship or a castle. LEGO really allowed me to exercise my creativity, while also developing my understanding of math and physics. Eventually I learned that there was a profession out there where you could do just that: engineering.

2. Coffee < tea

Blood runs through my veins, but so does caffeine. My preferred caffeinated beverage is tea. Don’t get me wrong—I don’t dislike coffee—I just think it’s boring in comparison. I feel that there’s a variety of tea out there to suit any mood or occasion, but the same can’t be said about coffee. There’s matcha, oolong and even bubble tea!

3. I want to train at a Muay Thai camp in Thailand

In the summer of 2019, I vacationed in Thailand and it quickly became one of my favourite travel destinations. Not only was the food great, but it’s also the birthplace of Muay Thai, one of my favourite combat sports. I didn’t get much of a chance to experience Muay Thai the last time I was in Thailand, but going back to Thailand to train at a Muay Thai camp for a month or two is now at the top of my bucket list.

4. I’ve experienced both living on campus and commuting

In my first two years, I was but a short walk away from my classes. Eventually, that short walk turned into an hour and a half commute when I decided to move to my parents’ house in Oakville. Be sure to check out the video that I did where I compare the pros and cons of living on campus and commuting (external link, opens in new window) .

5. I can’t stand watching or listening to myself speak

Despite having been in numerous videos over the past few years, something still feels strange about watching and listening to myself speak. I have a ton of fun making videos, but I don’t like watching them after they’ve been edited. Any video that I’m in, I’ll give one watch after it’s published, and that’s it! I won't revisit it afterwards!

From 2015 to 2017, I competed at the FIRST Robotics Competition event held annually at the MAC

The MAC is one of two gyms that we have at our university. I chose to go to school here largely because of the MAC. My first time being at the MAC was when I went there in high school for a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) event. The facilities really impressed me, and I have good memories from that experience and subsequent FRC events at the MAC.

Since coming to university here, I’ve been able to continue making good memories at the MAC. When in-person classes were happening, I spent nearly every day of the week working out there. The MAC is also where I got to meet Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield during the 2018 George Vari Innovation Conference.

I can’t wait to share my experiences with all of you this year! Stay tuned for more!
