I decided to name this blog “signing off!” because at work that’s what my team says to one another when we clock out. This time I’ll be signing off completely because the summer is coming to an end.

I remember the night before my first day of work I couldn’t sleep at all. Then during my first day, I had constant butterflies in my stomach because I was SO nervous. Looking back at that day and comparing it to where I am now, I can see how much I’ve grown and that’s all thanks to my experience.

Besides learning how to use Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Illustrator, I would like to share some other really important things that I have learned with you.

1. Make sure you’re organized

This job required me to use a platform called Asana (external link) , and it really helped me to stay on top of my tasks. It showcased all my due dates right in front of me so I could make sure I completed everything on time. Some weeks I would have more work than others, and during those weeks organization was my best friend.

2. Raise the white flag when you need to

I mentioned having a lot of work some weeks, and sometimes I couldn’t finish it by the due date. In times like this you need to learn that it’s okay to ask for extensions and “raise the white flag”. I won’t lie to you, I did have to take a step back and push deadlines because I simply just couldn’t do it. It’s better to take the time to do things right rather than rush.

3. Ask for help when you need it

I like to be pretty independent when it comes to working, and it works until it doesn’t. Those times include when I’m a little bit lost doing the task at hand. The first time this happened, I felt bad asking for help, so I just did what I thought was right but then ended up getting some negative feedback. That’s when I realized I do need to step out of my comfort zone and ask for a hand when I don’t know what to do. After that, I felt less ashamed asking for guidance and my quality of work got better.

4. Have fun

Work doesn’t feel like work when you’re enjoying it. I loved interacting with incoming students during takeovers because it helps me stay connected with the audience and lend a hand. One of my other favourite things is spending a couple of hours organizing data and listening to some good music while I’m doing it. Since I enjoyed what I was doing, I never felt overwhelmed or exhausted.

These are some of the key takeaways from my summer experience working with the Marketing and Communications team. I truly had a blast and hope to connect with you again sometime in the future.

For the last time this summer, “see” you soon!
