Deferral of Admission

Have you received an Offer of Admission to Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and want to defer?

We understand that you may not be able to attend TMU for personal reasons. We don't guarantee deferrals, but we do our best to grant them whenever possible. You can request a deferral for reasons like illness, financial hardship, or if your study permit was denied. You can't pursue post-secondary studies during your term of deferral.

To apply for a deferral, please accept your Offer by the deadline date stated in your Offer letter. If you missed the deadline to accept your Offer and you want to request a deferral, email us at admissiondeferral@torontomu.ca.

If you intend to defer, you're not required to pay the tuition deposit as stated in your Offer letter. You will, however, be required to make this payment at a future date. If your request for a deferral is granted, further information about the tuition deposit will be included in a new Offer of Admission.

Winter 2025

You’ve received an Offer for winter 2025:

If you submit the deferral request form by December 2, 2024, you'll receive a decision from us by December 20, 2024. It will be shared via your ChooseTMU Applicant Portal.

Fall 2025

You’ve received an Offer for fall 2025:

If you submit the deferral request form by July 15, 2025, you'll receive a decision from us by July 30, 2025. It will be shared via your ChooseTMU Applicant Portal.

If you’ve been granted an automatic general entrance scholarship, your scholarship will also be deferred (subject to TMU's continuance of the scholarship program in the new term of admission).

Your final admission average at the time of deferral will be used. The value of your scholarship will be determined in accordance with the fall 2026 award value grid. Courses completed during your deferral year will not be considered for a scholarship.

You must meet any/all admission conditions stipulated in your Offer of Admission.

If you attend an accredited academic post-secondary institution after being granted a deferral, and without prior approval, TMU reserves the right to rescind your deferral and Offer of Admission. In this instance, you will be required to reapply, pay a new application fee and submit official academic transcripts. Exceptions may be considered if you pursue studies for religious or cultural reasons.

The information you provide will be kept confidential but will be included in your official application to TMU. It will not be provided to any other department at TMU, including the Academic Accommodation Support office.

The university reserves the right to request medical or other documentation to support your request for a deferral.

Deferrals are non-transferable. If you are granted a deferral of admission for a program, it only applies to that program and will not apply to another program of interest.
